# The Phone Area Explained

This guide provides an overview of the functions of the telephony area in the PASCOM app.

The telephony area is the central hub for your daily communication in the PASCOM app. Here you will find all the necessary functions to make calls, retrieve your mailbox, or send faxes. Below, we explain the individual control elements in detail.

## Your Telephony Devices

Here you can see at a glance which telephony device is being used for calls. The icons show you which audio channel is used for the voice (microphone) and the sound (speaker).

![Display of the telephony devices being used](https://2713225-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FVIw0BpSv358R2Pr2HflD%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-79835e7c5fa459a85fd0804fabd7e18f76de0644%2Fdevices.en.png?alt=media)

{% hint style="info" %}
Before you start making calls, you must choose an end device in the [Device Management](/en/user/pascom-app-userguide/mydevices.md) that you want to use for outgoing calls. This can be the **integrated softphone** of the PASCOM app or a **desk phone** that has been assigned to you.
{% endhint %}

## Outbound Call Rules / Identities for Outgoing Calls

Before a call, you can select the identity for outgoing calls. Behind these identities, you will find predefined outbound call rules that you can use to signal externally.

You can find a detailed guide on how to use outbound call rules [here](/en/user/pascom-app-userguide/how-to-use-outbound-rules.md).

## The Dialpad

Use the input field to type in the phone number of your desired contact. You don't have to worry about special formats or spaces – the PASCOM app processes the input intelligently. Once you have entered the number, start the call by clicking on the **green receiver**.

**Tip:** The dialpad also functions as a search. You can enter the names of colleagues or contacts directly here to find them quickly.

For more information on the search function, please refer to our guide on [Search](/en/user/pascom-app-userguide/search.md).

## The Voicemail Box

Your personal control center for missed calls is just a click away. Use the **Voicemail** button to call your answering machine directly.

In the voicemail box voice menu, you can listen to messages, manage folders, or configure your personal announcements.

A detailed description of all menu options can be found in the guide on the [Voicemail Box](#ihre-voicemailbox).

## Sending Faxes

If you have a **virtual fax**, the **Fax button** will appear in the telephony area.

With this function, you can send digital documents (PDFs) directly from your computer to a fax number without having to use a physical fax machine.

How faxing works in detail can be found in the guide on [Faxing](/en/user/pascom-app-userguide/fax.md).

## Redial

Do you need to reach a contact or a phone number again, e.g., because it was busy or the call was interrupted? Use the **Redial** button.

A click on this button immediately calls the last dialed phone number again, without you having to enter it once more.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.pascom.net/en/user/pascom-app-userguide/telephony.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
